Why should I use a business coach?

"How can a coach possibly help if they don't know my business inside out?"

This is a commonly held belief, but how valid is it?

How useful is it to bring in someone who shares the same background as you, the same knowledge as you, and possibly also the same assumptions as you? How likely will working together with a "mini me" generate new perspectives, innovative approaches or novel ideas?

How useful might it be to work with someone who might know things that you don't? Who might have other experiences that could help you address challenges you now face? Who might bring you a different perspective? Who could bring complementary skills, perspectives and experiences to your own? How much more likely will working with an external coach generate new perspectives, innovative approaches or novel ideas?

Joining together with a business coach brings extra power because you HARNESS BOTH your OWN wealth of experience in your business AND your coach's DIFFERENT experience and perspective and specific coaching skills.

It is clearly effective to bring in specialists to deal with, for example, computerising a network or designing and writing a website, even when you could probably do some or all of it yourself. In the same way, working with a coach is much more effective than working alone. Most likely, you will reach your goals much more quickly and effectively and explore options that would never have occurred to you otherwise.

When you feel:

  • you don't have time to work on strategy because you're too busy working on day to day things;
  • the "to do" list is still too long even though you've been extremely busy all day all week;
  • you have an idea of what you want to do but somehow you never have time to make it happen, or don't know how to;
  • overwhelmed or stressed;
  • you don't have a strategic plan, vision or purpose that you and your staff are working towards;
  • you do have a plan, vision and purpose and would like to know how well you are achieving it or if it needs to be tweaked; or
  • your business is growing successfully and you want to keep it that way;

a business coach can help you make the difference.

Business coaching is not needed because you can't do the job. It is not because you are desperate and your business will fold if you don't change the way you do things. It is not because you are incapable or unskilled.

On the contrary, a business coach is needed when you want to explore "Is there another way?" "Could I do this better, more effectively and more profitably?" "How can I make more time to work on the business and not be tied up in it"?

Coaching is not a quick fix and it doesn't involve someone coming in and telling you all the answers and what you should do (I suggest you contact a consultant if you're looking for this). Coaching is a partnership that gives you the thinking time and space to develop your own solutions. It may be provocative, and challenge assumptions you are not aware of, it will be supportive, it will help you see things from a different perspective and it will offer a "safe environment" to test out new ideas and reflect on what might work for you.
