Who is Coaching for?

Coaching is for anyone who wants, and is ready to invest time and effort, to make changes in their life or their organisation in order to achieve their full potential, improve their performance at work or in some other part of their life, identify their aspirations and achieve the results they truly deserve. Do you want to excel? Do you want to develop the confidence, attitude and strategy to be the best you can be and get the results and success you deserve? Perhaps most people are familiar with the concept of coaching in Sport. All professional players recognise the value of having a coach (in fact, the best have lots of coaches!). Why do people have a coach when they are among the best in the world at what they do? There are probably a number of contributing reasons that could be summed up in four words that are true of all high performing individuals who hire a personal coach: they want to excel.

  • Even when we are good at what we do, if we want to be great we need to be continually improving. If we are not getting better, we will be getting worse compared to others who are getting better.
  • We can't see our own mistakes - or we don't see them until its too late. A coach does not have to be as skilled or experienced as we are at doing something in order to reflect back to us how we are doing and help us work through how to improve.
  • We can't see our habits, assumptions and limiting beliefs. It takes someone independent to notice these and ask us how useful they are to us now, even if they had been useful to us in the past. This is one area where a coach really makes a difference to help us improve our performance.
  • It is not enough to have the skills, techniques and experience that come through practise. About 80% of success is due more to our attitude of mind - whats in your head. Is it interfering and holding us back (limiting beliefs, habits and thoughts like "I'll never be able to do this, its too difficult") or is it constructive and taking us forward. Do we have the determination to succeed? For example, in golf, Tiger Woods is renowned for being able to focus clearly without being distracted by what's going on around him, to relax and stay calm under pressure. This helps him to win more competitions. Having a coach to help us develop a positive attitude, confidence and strategy to achieve our success makes all the difference.

If you want to make a change, a coach could support you to achieve what you want. Changing behaviours, like getting healthier, getting fitter, making more time for what is important to you, the way you relate to your boss or staff at work, and so on, means you need to change ingrained habits. We know this is not easy and takes time, so having a coach can make a real difference. A coach will help you find ways to keep up your determination and motivation to do it, and different ways to approach it, so you could enjoy what you are doing and make the changes sustainable and long lasting.

If you don't really know what you want, only that you are not very happy with your situation right now, a coach can help you feel clearer about what you do want and where you want to be, and help you take practical steps to get there.

If you run your own business, or have a senior or executive role in your company, a coach can help you clarify your thoughts and reduce your stress so you make better decisions about your work and future.

Coaching works well when the focus is on the present and the future. If you feel you need to work through your feelings and thoughts about a traumatic event in the past before you can move on, the chances are that coaching will not be the best solution for you and perhaps a counsellor would help you better.
