Coaching works best over a period of time, where you have a chance between sessions to put into practice the outcomes of a coaching meeting.
How does it work ?
In very general terms, Aeona's clients say they find that coaching with Sue Mitchell helps them to become much clearer in their own minds about what they want to do and also to come up with many more options about how to do it than they have managed so far on their own. They then feel more in control, more confident and more positive that they can achieve it! We end each session with an action plan, where clients come up with the things they need and want to do, and set specific dates and times to do it. Our clients find this invaluable to make things happen, especially as we then celebrate their success at achieving (at least part of!) their plans at the next session.
During your coaching sessions, Aeona's coach, Dr Sue Mitchell, will use incisive, probing and challenging questioning to establish where you are now, where you want to get to and what's standing in the way. Coaching is based on the fact that very often we know the answers but sometimes we need someone to prompt us into thinking through our issues and finding the right solutions.
Sue listens to what you say and to what you don't say. She will ask questions that you may never have thought of asking yourself. She may also introduce various exercises and tools that you can do during or between sessions, to help you move forwards.
Sue works with you to acknowledge issues, discover your own solutions, knock down barriers, review the situation and explore options. Sue supports you to move forward and implement your chosen actions. She encourages you to maintain a positive attitude and continually focus on your goals and keep on track until you reach them.
This is where coaching brings a real advantage. Coaching is individual and continuing, so you get one to one, long term inspiration and support.
Aeona coaches in accordance with the Association for Coaching Code of Ethics. Aeona's coach, Dr Sue Mitchell, is an associate member of the Association for Coaching and the Institute of Leadership and Management. She is also a member of the Edinburgh organisation team for the Association for Coaching. Her coaching relevant qualifications include NLP Business Practitioner and Certificate in Performance Coaching. She is currently training for a Diploma in Corporate and Executive Coaching.
What is the procedure?
The initial call or meeting with Aeona is free and designed to establish whether coaching is the right route for you at this moment in time. There are circumstances where other activities would be more suitable, such as counseling, therapy, training, mentoring, or bringing in a consultant. See the section explaining the difference between these and coaching. If coaching is appropriate, the initial meeting will also cover
- the issues you want to address by coaching,
- how you will recognise when you have successfully achieved your goals,
- the programme and contract - the location and approximate frequency of meetings and the overall time period, which may be fixed or may be agreed to depend on the time taken to successfully achieve goals, depending on how you want to proceed. Meetings often last about 1 hour or longer to achieve meaningful results. At Aeona, we let you choose the coaching option that suits you - a standard per-hour rate, or a three-hour or six-hour package, which offer a 5% and 10% discount respectively on the hourly rate.

The first programme meeting will identify and agree specific goals and measures of success for the coaching programme overall, and for this meeting in particular. At the end, you will have a list of things to do next - an action plan - that will move you nearer to achieving your overall programme goals. Subsequent meetings will start by briefly reviewing how you got on since the last meeting, establishing what the outcomes should be from this session, and will end with a plan of action to help you achieve the changes you want. Mid-way through the programme and at the end, we review the progress towards the programme goals and the coaching effectiveness. At this point we can establish whether we should extend the coaching programme, change the frequency or length of meetings or if you want to change your goals.
The above procedure applies primarily to individuals coming to coaching. Where a third party pays for coaching, the procedure is altered slightly to involve them in the contracting stage. They may also require feedback, in which case the parameters will be defined clearly and agreed at the outset by the sponsor or client, coachee and coach, to ensure confidentiality of content during the sessions.
